Matthews

Where Community Roots Meet Everyday Convenience.

Matthews is one of Charlotte’s most established and well-rounded suburbs, known for its strong sense of community, charming downtown, and easy access to the city. Blending small-town character with modern convenience, it offers a lifestyle that feels both connected and comfortably familiar.

Tucked into the southeast corner of Mecklenburg County, Matthews grew up around a 1874 railroad depot and still carries that small-town feel downtown along Trade Street, while newer subdivisions, shopping centers, and a steady stream of new residents have made it one of the area’s more sought-after suburbs for buyers who want walkable charm without giving up quick highway access to Charlotte.

Location & Lifestyle

Matthews sits in the southeastern corner of Mecklenburg County, bordered by the city of Charlotte to the northwest and southwest and by the town of Mint Hill to the northeast. US-74 (Independence Boulevard) runs through town and connects directly to I-485, putting Uptown Charlotte roughly 11 miles and 15 to 25 minutes away depending on traffic, with SouthPark and Ballantyne’s job centers a similarly short drive.

Downtown Matthews centers on historic Trade Street, where a 19th-century railroad depot town has grown into a walkable strip of restaurants, shops, and Stumptown Park, while the surrounding neighborhoods range from established in-town streets near the historic core to newer subdivisions off Sardis and Matthews-Mint Hill Roads.
